The Traditional Birth Attendants training project provides comprehensive training and birth supplies to the women in Kenya who assist in the majority of the country’s births. With the supplies we provide, along with the training in well-woman practices, HIV prevention/testing, Family Planning and Emergency protocol, the villages we have visited have reported a drastic drop in maternal and infant death rates. All together we have reached over 800 women with these much needed supplies and training.
However, here are still many rural villages around Malindi where women and infant deaths are frighteningly prevalent and yet preventable with the simplest of resources. We are the only organization providing training and resources to Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) in these areas, and the women who have already participated in training desire continuing education and always need more supplies. Our nurses have added instruction in nutrition, many options for family planning, and are providing HIV testing & counseling. The TBAs are also learning how to assess pregnancy risks and the protocol to deal with safe hospital transport should complications arise.
Looking forward, we want to expand our Safety in Pregnancy and Childbirth program to include a maternity clinic. (costing around $22,000, for the initial lease, purchase of equipment, supplies, wages etc.) When complications in a pregnancy arise, women often will not go to the Malindi Hospital. Many women have other small children who cannot accompany them, or they fear the overcrowding, lack of sanitation & hostile treatment they receive from hospital health workers. Teaching More is making plans to create a safe, clean, nurturing place for Malindi’s women to give birth. Our goal is to continue to save lives by providing education and supplies to the remote areas where they are so desperately needed.
